M&Ms AND THE MOLE - A mole is a counting unit used for calculations of particles. 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles. So 1 mole of M&Ms = 6.02 x 1023 M&Ms. Students calculate how much space one mole of M&Ms would occupy. Then they determine how many moles of M&Ms can fit into our classroom. (Actually, the answer is a very small fraction of one mole, since moles are so big!)
